VISION RESEARCH CENTER IN THE NEWSThe Vision Research Center is an interdisciplinary research institute that combines all aspects of vision research, namely basic science, translational and clinical research as well as delivery of clinical care in all subspecialties of ophthalmology. Vision Research Center faculty are academic researchers and clinician scientists from the University of Missouri Kansas City’s Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy with ongoing international and national collaborations, as well as local collaborators from the University of Missouri Kansas City’s Schools of Business, Computing and Engineering, Dentistry and Biological Sciences, the Stowers Institute of Medical Research, Kansas University and private industry. With the Vision Research Center’s central mission to discover and develop cures for blinding diseases its activities in the fields of drug discovery, diagnostics and therapy development have led to numerous privately, philanthropically and federally funded research programs. Dr. Nelson Sabates, M.D., Dr. Peter Koulen, Ph.D. and Dr. Ashim Mitra, Ph.D. are co-directors of the Vision Research Center. Both, Dr. Koulen and Dr. Mitra are NIH-funded experts in the field of ocular and nervous system drug development drug delivery, respectively, with multi-million dollar research programs that have established track-records of continued competitively renewed extramural funding. Both serve as national experts on editorial boards and on review boards for the federal government, state agencies, foundations and private industry, regularly contribute seminal studies to the advancement of biomedical research and have been recognized for achievements in intellectual property development, research commercialization and translational biomedical research. Additional faculty of the Vision Research Center include eight basic scientists covering all relevant aspects of vision research and twelve clinician researchers in all sub-disciplines of ophthalmology with presence in almost all major clinical care facilities in the Greater Kansas City area. Research and technology transfer based collaborations with academic and private institutions expand the expertise of the Vision Research Center to the neighboring fields of epidemiology, biology and engineering. This combined expertise represents a nationally and internationally recognized unique resource for translational medicine in the field of ophthalmology and vision research that local as well as international companies, state and academic entities regularly consult and collaborate with to advance vision research and enhance the quality of healthcare in ophthalmology.
