VISION RESEARCH CENTER FACULTY
Dr. Peter Koulen
The Department of Ophthalmology is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Koulen, PhD, to the Felix and Carmen Sabates Missouri Endowed Chair of Vision Research at UMKC. “There is no doubt that his innovative and exciting work at Vision Research Center will help us lead the nation in discovering new ways to prevent and combat eye diseases,” said Dr. Nelson Sabates, professor and
Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Koulen comes to us from the University of North
Texas Health Science Center, where he served as professor of pharmacology and neuroscience and as the director of the North Texas Eye Research Institute. In these positions, he was integral in generating international and federal funding for basic and translational research efforts, developing intellectual property, and training clinicians and scientists.
A reviewer for more than two dozen professional scientific journals, an editorial board member of scientific journals, and a reviewer for several funding agencies – including the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and other national and international government agencies and research foundations – Dr. Koulen’s expertise in neuroscience, drug development, vision and ophthalmological research has earned high regard in the scientific community.
His contributions to multi-million dollar research efforts and involvement in intellectual property development in the biomedical sciences have also been recognized by the business community. He received the Fort Worth Business Press 2006 “Forty Under Forty Award” and the Dallas Business Journal 2008 “Healthcare Hero Award.”
Dr. Koulen is extensively published in professional scientific journals and has spoken at scientific meetings, universities and research forums across the country on topics related to neuroscience, biophysics, vision research, eye disease, and drug and therapy development.
